Kiekie

Kiekie is a densely branched, brittle, woody climber native to New Zealand.

Preparing the kiekie takes time. each leaf is removed, cleaned and boiled.

The edge and mid-rib are brittle and are removed, I remove that after I have boiled it while the leaf is still soft. The kiekie can be woven while it is green, it eventually turns a striking off-white colour.

Kiekie is arguably the most valued weaving plant after harakeke.
